The Mazda MX-5 has built a reputation as one of the world’s best-known two-seat sports cars, combining lightweight construction, rear-wheel drive and an engaging driving experience with a relatively affordable price. For the 2023 model year, Mazda introduced a new trim-level structure in the UK, giving buyers three new grades: Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura.

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 range expanded to ten variants across the Roadster convertible and Retractable Fastback (RF) models. The changes brought revised equipment levels, new naming, a fresh exterior colour and a number of specification updates.

Mazda also continued to offer a choice of two naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G petrol engines, giving buyers a choice between the 1.5-litre 132PS engine and the more powerful 2.0-litre 184PS engine.

2023 Mazda MX-5: New Trim Levels

For the 2023 model year, Mazda replaced the previous MX-5 trim structure with three new grades: Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura.

The new naming structure applied across both body styles, with four Roadster models and six Retractable Fastback RF models making up the UK range.

The Roadster is the traditional soft-top convertible, while the RF features Mazda’s retractable hardtop design.

The new trim levels were designed to give customers a clearer progression through the range, from the entry-level Prime-Line to the more comprehensively equipped Exclusive-Line and range-topping Homura.

Prime-Line

The Prime-Line became the entry point to the 2023 Mazda MX-5 range.

The Roadster version used Mazda’s 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine producing 132PS and was priced from £25,800 in the UK. Standard equipment included 16-inch black alloy wheels, heated seats, climate-control air conditioning, cruise control, DAB radio and Mazda Connect with a 7-inch colour display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto were also included.

The RF Prime-Line was also powered by the 1.5-litre engine and started from £27,700.

The Prime-Line therefore provided a relatively simple way into the MX-5 without requiring buyers to move to one of the more expensive grades.

Exclusive-Line

The Exclusive-Line sat above the Prime-Line and added a significant amount of extra equipment.

The 132PS Roadster Exclusive-Line started from £28,100 and added features including black leather seats, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive front lighting, rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and additional driver-assistance technology.

The Exclusive-Line was also available with Mazda’s 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine producing 184PS.

For the 2.0-litre manual version, Mazda included performance-focused equipment such as a front strut brace, limited-slip differential and Bilstein dampers.

The 2.0-litre Exclusive-Line Roadster was priced from £30,460, while the RF version started at £32,360.

Homura

At the top of the 2023 Mazda MX-5 range was the Homura.

The Homura was exclusively paired with the 184PS 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine and was designed to provide the most performance-focused specification in the range.

Manual Homura models received 17-inch BBS alloy wheels, stainless-steel scuff plates and red Brembo front brake callipers. The model also received additional styling and equipment upgrades to distinguish it from the other MX-5 grades.

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Homura Roadster started from £32,460, while the RF Homura started from £34,560.

The RF versions could also be specified with a six-speed automatic gearbox when equipped with the 2.0-litre engine.

2023 Mazda MX-5 Engines and Performance

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 continued with two naturally aspirated four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engines.

The entry-level 1.5-litre engine produced 132PS, while the 2.0-litre engine produced 184PS. Both Roadster and RF versions were available with the two engine options, although the exact engine and gearbox combinations depended on the trim level.

The 2.0-litre engine was reserved for the higher-specification versions of the Roadster, while the Homura was exclusively available with the 184PS engine.

For buyers choosing an RF with the 2.0-litre engine, Mazda offered the option of a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Roadster remained manual-only.

The 2.0-litre manual models also benefited from hardware designed to improve handling, including a front strut brace, limited-slip differential and Bilstein dampers.

New Zircon Sand Paint Colour

One of the most noticeable visual changes for the 2023 Mazda MX-5 was the introduction of Zircon Sand Metallic.

The new colour gave the MX-5 a distinctive appearance while complementing the car’s relatively simple sports-car design.

Mazda also continued to offer a range of established colours and wheel designs across the different trim levels.

Kinematic Posture Control

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 also benefited from Mazda’s Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) technology.

KPC works with the MX-5’s braking and suspension systems to help reduce body lift during cornering. It was fitted as standard across the 2023 MX-5 range.

The system formed part of Mazda’s ongoing development of the fourth-generation MX-5 rather than representing a completely new generation of the sports car.

2023 Mazda MX-5 Prices

At launch, UK pricing for the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Roadster started at £25,800 for the 132PS Prime-Line.

The range then increased through the 132PS Exclusive-Line, 184PS Exclusive-Line and 184PS Homura, with the Homura starting at £32,460. The RF range started at £27,700 and extended to £34,560 for the 184PS Homura.

What Made the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Different?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 was not a new generation, but it represented an important update to the UK range.

The biggest change was the new trim structure. Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura replaced the previous naming system and made it easier to distinguish the different equipment levels.

The addition of Zircon Sand Metallic also gave buyers a new exterior colour, while the Homura introduced a more performance-focused specification with BBS wheels and Brembo brakes on manual models.

The underlying MX-5 formula remained familiar: a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car with naturally aspirated petrol engines and a choice between a traditional soft-top Roadster and the RF retractable hardtop.

How Does the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Compare With Other Sports Cars?

The MX-5 continued to occupy a relatively unusual position in the sports-car market.

Rather than concentrating on outright power, Mazda focused on keeping the car compact, lightweight and engaging to drive. That approach helped the MX-5 retain its appeal despite the increasing popularity of much more powerful performance cars.

2023 Mazda MX-5: Final Thoughts

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 brought a revised UK range rather than a complete redesign, but the changes gave the popular roadster a clearer trim structure and some worthwhile equipment upgrades.

The Prime-Line provided an accessible entry point, while the Exclusive-Line offered a stronger balance of equipment and price. At the top of the range, the Homura combined the 184PS engine with a more performance-focused specification.

With the introduction of Zircon Sand Metallic, standard Kinematic Posture Control and the revised trim structure, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 continued Mazda’s approach of refining the fourth-generation car rather than radically changing its character.

For enthusiasts looking for an affordable sports car that prioritises driving enjoyment over outright power, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 remained one of the most distinctive choices in its class.
