I am looking for some tips and tricks that don't require a lot of time or money.

Is there any kind of wax that protects the vehicle and makes it easier to rinse off? Or maybe some soap formula that allows for a quick and easy clean? Is it better to clean soon as or wait until the mud/dirt dries?

It is usually better to clean it whilst the mud and grime are still wet. Once it gets baked in, you will find it harder to remove it and a lot of time sit will leave a residue or film. I don't have any magical formula to recommend. I just use the cheap stuff and it does the job just fine for me.
