My wife wants a kitten. She has wanted one since we moved but we have a dog that is 4 years old. He is a German Shepherd and I am concerned that he will be too rough with a kitten. I have no idea how to go about introducing a kitten to a dog either as I have never owned cats but my wife is not too concerned. I just want to make sure we do it right. Any advice on approaching this would be helpful!

Kittens usually do fine. The concern is the dog which is understandable. I would say to introduce them slowly and only while holding the kitten. Allow the kitten to have its own space, maybe a bedroom? Where the dog can't go but can see it. Using a children's gate can allow for this.

@chriskeepz We ended up doing your recommendation. We found a children's gate fairly cheap. We did get a kitten. The issue is, within 3 days of doing this, he has already learned to climb over it! So we had to just keep the door closed and only have the kitten out around the dog when we can watch everything. He tried to grab him twice when he was playing and did scare him but he didn't hurt the kitten which is good.

Oh right, I should have mentioned that. Some are easier to climb than others. You likely should have used two. I am glad things are working out for your though. I hope the two become friends.
